Penalty Double

The traditional type of double meaning that you can defeat the opponent’s contract. Perhaps the ideal opportunity is when the opponents are in a grand slam and you have the Ace of trumps.
ª Q987 © A987 ¨ 653 § Q3	Geoff Mead picked up this dull looking collection in the match between Glenfield A and Loughborough B on 19^th March 2003. His interest perked up however when the opponents soared to seven hearts. He doubled. The contract eventually drifted two down for a 500 penalty and a 10 imp swing to Glenfield.

Most partnerships play a double of a pre-emptive bid as take out. However, use of the Fishbein or Film conventions allows such a double to be played as penalty.

Most North’s would open one heart, most East’s will overcall two diamonds, most South’s would wish they could double for penalties . . .
Board 1 Dealer N Love All	North ª 63 © AJ876 ¨ T § AJ962		But, in the modern style, they cannot. A double would be for takeout, showing four spades. The solution is for South to pass. Then, if West passes too, North should strain, wherever possible, to re-open with a double. This, too, is for take-out, but there is nothing to stop South converting it to penalties by passing. When the hand was played, at Glenfield Bridge Club, on 8^th March 2006, there were lots of different scores, but none of them were two diamonds doubled minus one. Only two pairs bid and made a contract. The North/South winners, Doreen & Len Hillier stopped in two hearts, making eight tricks, while Ian Hubbard & Eddie Blount made eight tricks in two spades. The East/West winners, Dennis Bradley & Geoff Mead, did almost as well; they defended four hearts and took it two down. But the best East/West score went to Terry Downs & Laurence Popple who defeated four hearts by five tricks. The results, travellers and personal scorecards are still online.
