This example comes from the semi final of the Gimson on 12th March 2003.

After two passes South opened one heart.  Peter Neville then had a close decision as to whether overcall one no trump or two clubs.     In the event he decided that the absence of a heart stop and the quality of the club suit tipped the balance to a bid of two clubs.  North and East passed and South protected with two hearts.  Peter and North saw no reason to disturb this but now Peter reaped the benefits from his initial decision when Tim Glover was able to bid three clubs.  With the diamond finesse working and the spade honours split; this made precisely nine tricks and gained 11 of the available 16 match points; being equalled once and being beaten only by those pairs whose opponent’s got too high in hearts.

The problem with the one no trump overcall on this deal is that North and East are likely to pass and South, once more, is likely to protect.   Now, after two passes East has nothing sensible to say.  The defence has to be very accurate to take more than six tricks and, indeed, 100 to East/West was the common result.
