A simple raise of one of a suit to the two level shows between six and nine points.

It is usually based on four card support but, over one of a major, especially spades, may be based on three cards.   This hand, from the Derbyshire Green Point Swiss Pairs on 27th September 2003 is a reasonable raise of one spade to two.

A jump raise of one of a suit to the three level normally  shows between ten and eleven points.

§ J742

I say normally, as many pairs play inverted minors whereby the jump to three of a minor shows 6-9 points while the raise to two of a minor is unlimited and forcing to two no trumps; showing 10 or more points and four card support.

This is one of the hands that persuaded Peter Neville and Tim Glover to play inverted minors.  Tim opened the East hand one diamond and Peter responded one spade and raised Tim’s three diamond rebid to game.  Neither player had much option in the bidding without risking missing game in spades.  After Tim’s three diamond rebid, I can see little alternative but five diamonds from Peter.  Tim could do little but pass.   Playing inverted minors, Peter could bid two diamonds, which is forcing to two no trumps.  There would be no risk of a spade fit being missed but, on this occasion, Tim could apply Roman Key Card Blackwood without risk and, hearing that Peter has the two missing key cards, Tim could bid at least six diamonds.

Fortunately, the slam was missed at the other table as well for a flat board.

The hand occurred in the Leicestershire Green Point Swiss Teams on 28th September 2003.
